Buying a car in Indonesia

This is so different from Philippines and most of the world.

Is buying a car in Indonesia worth it? YES - highways are new, and are fantastic, roads are in good shape. There are some very steep grades, so something with high road clearance is needed, but not necessary.

Cars are quite cheap to buy in Indonesia, compared to Philippines.

Even New, they are all locally manufactured - lots of SEA cars are manufactured in Indonesia and exported to other ASEAN countries.

Note: When I say juta, I mean million, so 1juta == 1,000,000 or about $70. 10juta ==10,000,000 or $700. by default juta is IDR, the Indonesian Rupiah.

Even the Motorcycles. - I would seriously consider buying a motorcycle and/or scooter. Scooters cost around 20,000,000 IDR or 20juta, while motorcycles around 28-38juta.

18.8 juta for a Honda Scoopy, or monthly rental of about 700,000-900,000

28.8 juta for a Kawasaki W175 Cafe Rider, 175CC, manual, monthly rental of 3-6,000,000. 250,000 IDR daily.

Or, if you want something newer, fater, and more tech - the Yamaha XSR 155.
38 juta, monthly rental of 5-8juta, daily 250-350 minimum.

As stated in my Buying a car in the Philippines article, one example if you buy new, the Toyota Wigo/Toyota Agya/Daihatsu Ayla:

Monthly rental: 4.5-7juta. Daily rental of 250,000. At this point I have an odd fascination with it. I do not know why.

Indonesia: AYLA/AGYA is the Same model as The WIGO below.

But they even have a AYLA model at 100,000,000, or 100juta, which is $7000!

Philippines

50,000 PHP = 14,000,000 IDR/Rupiah. So, 700,000 PHP = $14,000, or 200,000,000 IDR/RUPIAH.

I just think it's amazing, the vast difference between a basic car price, the taxes added in the Philippines and how much more Value you get in Indonesia.

Same car, base package in Indonesia goes for 100,000,000 IDR, or 100juta. $11,000 USD base in Philippines, $7,000 USD base in Indonesia.

But - enough about car specs and such - what about actually how to do it?

1. You must have a local ID, KTP/SKTT - foreigners get this via having a valid KITAS.

If you do not have a KTP, you can not register the car in your name. KTP can also be ITAS.

There is no other way, renting a car is easy peasy, because getting a kitas or such is quite pricy. Minimum 15juta for a year, 20juta for two years. But it is a 2 year unlimited entry visa as well. This is before PT/PMA registration and more.

Upon purchase of a car, in cash - you should get:

a. STNK (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan/Registration)
 b. BPKB (Buku Pemilik Kendaraan Bermotor/Proof of ownership book)
 c. Faktor (original invoice for the car when it was purchased from the manufacturer)
 d. Kwitansi Blangko - 3 lembar (3 copies of a receipt)

The first copy of the kwitansi blangko should contain the following information:

Jenis Mobil
Warna
Nomor Polisi
Nomor Chasis
Nomor Rangka

This first copy should be signed by the person whose name appears in the BPKB on top of a Rp 10,000 meterai (tax stamp).

The second and third copy of this receipt should be left blank, except for the signature of the original owner, whose name appears in the BPKB. No meterai is required. These copies would be required by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the event that the name in the BPKB needs to be changed. It is very important to have these three copies! Otherwise it may be difficult to resell your vehicle in the future. In doing the research for this piece we could not find out why the blank copies were needed as none of the Indonesians we talked to had ever changed the ownership name on their vehicle (balik nama).

3. Kwitansi or Tanda Terima (receipt for the transaction) - this receipt will include the amount of money that was paid for the vehicle.

4. Photocopy of KTP or ITAS (identity card) for the person whose name appears on the BPKB. This will be needed to renew the yearly registration for the vehicle (STNK). Pay close attention to the expiration date on the KTP. If the KTP is expired, it cannot be used to renew the annual STNK. You will then need to track down the owner and get a photocopy of his valid KTP.

The above was copied from: https://www.expat.or.id/info/buyingacar.html a great resource. I was going to write it out, but they laid it out nicely with explination so much easier.

This doesn't include the annual taxes, which appear on the STNK - it can be renewed online https://katadata.co.id/redaksi/berita/6119e41b3e99e/syarat-dan-tata-cara-perpanjang-stnk-online-tanpa-antre
